Feature Artist Bio
By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the second of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by contemporary American landscape painter Jeanne Tangney (born 1957 in Rhode Island, USA).
Jeanne Tangney was introduced to pastels in college and found them to be a perfect fit. Her interest in drawing was encouraged as a child, and although she explored many different media in the course of her education, it was pastels that provided her first real exposure to the painting process. She sometimes experiments with oils, but there is something about the versatility and immediacy of the pastel medium that has always appealed to her.
Best known for her sensitive still lifes and landscapes, Jeanne strives to create a certain mood in her work. The objects in her still lifes are carefully selected and arranged – lighting and color choices are equally important. She paints landscapes on location in the plein air tradition whenever possible, but will work from reference photos in the studio if that is the best way to capture a particular scene. She often pushes the impact of color in her paintings to create more interest or to interpret a familiar area in an unfamiliar way.
Although well established in Rhode Island, Jeanne’s reputation has spread beyond her home state. She has been juried into several of the more elite venues featuring pastels on a national and international level, including exhibits hosted by the Pastel Society of America, the International Association of Pastel Societies, and the Pastel Journal’s “Pastel 100”. Throughout her career, she has been honored with many awards and invitational exhibits. Her work is featured in a number of corporate collections in the New England region and is represented in private collections worldwide.
Teaching has added another dimension to Jeanne’s career as an artist. For the past several years, Jeanne has become a sought after instructor of classes and workshops. She is a faculty member of the Newport Art Museum and Wickford Art Association and thoroughly enjoys sharing her passion for pastels with others.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT
“I paint the world around me – it is a constant inspiration. My work leans toward the representational, but I tend to push and play with the light and color found in nature.
I am most attracted to simple, strong subjects in both my landscapes and still lifes. A coastal marsh, a stand of trees, a vase of flowers or a collection of objects - no matter what the theme, my primary intent is to convey an appreciation of places and things, creating a mood or emotion through the effects of light, color and composition."
