Feature Artist Bio
By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the first of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by contemporary American landscape painter Richard Alan Nichols (born 1963 in New Mexico, USA).
Richard's natural ability was given a strong foundation in traditional impressionism, brought forward during his tenure at the prestigious American Academy of Art in Chicago. His knowledge of his gift was honed under the tutelage of Masters Irving Shapiro and Ted Smuskiewicz, whose guidance was instrumental in young Richard receiving numerous scholarships and awards.
Nichols sees that Taos, NM and his creativity are intertwined, a thread woven in the tapestry that defines his artistic life. “One of the Chosen spots on earth,” according to writer D.H. Lawrence, it has been a Mecca of creativity for centuries.
It’s living in an unknown territory not sure of the final chapter but enjoying the journey. A journey path that he is still partaking, from subject matters of: Acutely aware of the delicate hues created by light, Richard strives to render--in his landscapes, figurative works and still lifes--"a visual poem" with each stroke.
As an internationally-recognized artist, Richard Alan Nichols is highly sought after by many private collectors and in many permanent collections such as American Academy of Art; Koop Collection; Crouch Collection; Hughes Collection; Goloff Collection; Taos Art Museum; The Town of Taos; Sears, Roebuck & Company; and the Universities of Wisconsin, Nebraska, Minnesota and Missouri.

“Working outdoors has inspired my painting process. I find that being on location creates an understanding of the subject that is difficult to arrive at working in the studio.
Success for me is conveying a sense of time and place in my paintings. I'm inspired by color and contrast, attempting to organize the unlimited variation of nature into a personal statement."
