By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the second of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by Swiss landscape 

painter Claudia Arztmann (born 1965 in Kärnten Austria).

Since childhood Claudia has always been fascinated by the landscape and landscape paintings. While she always drew, a journey to Norway in 1986 ignited her interest in painting with watercolors. Claudia admits her first attempts were horrible but nonetheless she was hooked by the watercolor medium. She read a lot of books to improve her paintings.

Basically self-taught, Claudia was able to refine her technique during a four-year stay in the U.S. and courses at Collin County Community College in Dallas. Her image contents are mainly landscapes.

Landscape painting has not lost attraction for Claudia,  even after 30 years of painting. Just to sit and watch a beautiful view soothes her soul; she finds fascination in how the light changes the mood of a landscape. In her surrounding environment she also finds lots of subject matter, particularly the renaturated areas of the river Thur. After every flood the landscape changes and she loves to watch how nature recreates itself. 

Every day habitats disappear, opening up the way for new superstructures, so Claudia aspires to document the natural world in all its beauty, sharing through her creativity an awareness of the wonders of nature all around us.
 

Claudia often roves with her camera, snapping what catches her eye. She edits the images afterwards on her home computer cutting sizes, changing colors, etc., then she prints the image and uses it as a reference for her landscape watercolors, which sometimes consist of elements from two images. It is not important to her to accurately document a scene or a place, but rather her intention is to create a harmonious overall impression. If it is necessary to move a tree in order to create a more harmonious painting Claudia feels free to do so. If a pale sky is too boring, she paints it dramatically with storm clouds.

 

Claudia presents her watercolors not as usual--under glass-- but stretches the paper over a canvas and then paints it. After completion, the image is then sprayed with several layers of Aquarell fixatives to ensure that the colors are not fading and to protect the surface from dust.
 

In addition to the content of a painting Claudia is fascinated by the watercolor technique, which always calls her anew. Her goal of controlling the flow of the colors while leaving enough space for happy accidents to occur is always a challenge and never gets boring to her.

Claudia has lived in Switzerland since 1989. She is married, with two sons.
