By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the first of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by South African

landscape painter Erika Van Zyl (born 1969 in South Africa).

Erika van Zyl is an impressionist who works in oils. Her work reflects the fascinating South African landscape. Colour, composition and contrast between lights and darks play an integral role in her paintings.

Erika received a degree in Nursing at Northwest University SA. While she is largely self-taught, she started painting part-time under Olga Hoffman in 1997. She also took workshops with Willie Jacobs. Jennifer McChristian and Dennis Perrin. She has also been conducting art classes and workshops since 2002.

I
t is Erika’s desire to develop with every painting and embrace every opportunity to learn from other artists. The artist has a great interest in Modern Impressionism and Plein Air Painting. Her early influences include South African Landscape artists Kobus Kotze, Anton Benson, Errol Boyle, and Christiaan Nice. Later influences include Jennifer Mc Christian, John Crump, Dennis Perrin and Colley Whisson.

Erika’s work finds its way into houses locally and abroad. Her work is on display at various Art Galleries, including Crouse Art,

Winelands Art Online Gallery, and Canvas and Cuisine online Art exhibitions. She is a Member of Plein Air South Africa.

She is married to Dewald and they have two children, Divan and Tanya. They stay in Lephalale where they are the owners of Picasso’s Guesthouse. They also own TaMala’s Cottage in Prince Albert.

                       ARTIST'S STATEMENT

“I strive to capture the unique South African landscape with all its diversity.

I love art, I love the South African landscape with all its vibrance. My biggest challenge is to do a painting where the viewer can ‘feel’ the scene. I will not sign my name until the ‘ lights are on’, until you can feel the houses have been lived in, the roads have been travelled."
