"Bringing the Museum to You"

The Cyber Art Show continues our study of Russian landscape painters in the Public Domain with a ten-piece Exhibition of works by Ivan Endogurov (1861-1898).

 

Born in Kronstadt, a municipal town in the Kronshtadtsky District of the federal city of St. Petersburg, Russia, Ivan was the son of a Rear Admiral and brother of a watercolorist. At 19, he attended lectures at the Faculty of St. Petersburg University and took private painting  lessons in E. Volkova. By 1885, he was winning medals for his paintings at academic exhibitions. From 1880-90 Endogurov spent most of his time in the Crimea, Ukraine and the Caucasus. In 1890 he moved to Italy for three years, then to Norway and France. During these years Ivan painted seascapes, landscapes and watercolors, mastering the techniques of his lyrical Russian creative style.

 

In addition to his success in academic exhibitions he also participated in exhibitions in the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, winning awards along the way. In 1886 he was awarded a silver medal at the Eurovision Society for the Promotion of Arts and another at the World Exhibitions in Paris in 1889. He also exhibited at international exhibitions in Chicago and Berlin.

 

Together with Ivan Shishkin and NA Jaroshenko, Endogurova was honored posthumously in the halls of the International Workers Aid (IAH). In 1899, his mother established an award named for he and his brothers.

 

Endogurova’s  sterling works are found in several museum collections, including the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery and others.
