  Feature Artist Bio

By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the first of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by American

landscape painter Stan Miller (born 1949 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota).

Stan graduated from Spokane Falls College in 1973, getting a degree in applied arts as well as commercial and fine art. Stan started painting full time right after graduation in 1973, choosing to do no commercial work, painting 10 to 12 hours a day, six days a week. He would often paint plein air throughout the summers, taking his motorcycle out into the country. He also moved into a very inexpensive rental house and bought a very used automobile so that his monthly expenses were minimal. He framed his own paintings hanging them anywhere and everywhere, churches, hotels, restaurants, beauty salons and he also did street fairs.  He sold his paintings for nearly nothing hoping to make just enough money to keep painting and pay his monthly bills.

After ten years of intense painting Miller’s work improved and the demand for his work increased, as did the prices. In 1976 Stan was accepted into the International American Watercolor Society Exhibition in New York City. In the 1980’s Miller started having exhibitions in museums such as the Charles Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana and the Frye Museum in Seattle, Washington.

Stan was accepted as a Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society in 2002, winning an award. In 2004 Miller won First Place in the Artist’s Magazine International Competition. In 2006 he won the Grand Prize in the Watercolor Magic Magazine National Competition.  In 2014 Miller was accepted into the World Watercolor Competition and Exhibition in Narbonne, France.

Stan recently returned from China where he was invited to teach and exhibit his work in Qingdao, China. In 2015 he was invited to exhibit and teach in Vietnam and in 2014 he was part of the World Watermedia Exposition in Bangkok, Thailand.

Stan Miller teaches painting workshops around the world, encouraging all of his students to believe that if they truly want to succeed in art, they can do it! But, it takes great commitment, dedication and most of all, a passion for painting.

                       ARTIST'S STATEMENT

As a representational painter who chooses to paint the traditional subject, the landscape, still life and portrait, my desire is not to repeat what has already been done.

Though it certainly may be subtle, I hope to take what is familiar, seemingly unoriginal, and quietly communicate a mood, a spiritual tone, a stillness. My primary concern when creating a painting that expresses the mood and emotion that I seek, is not, the subject matter. It is the arrangement of shapes, the emotion created by transitions from texture to non-texture, light to dark, warm to cool, rectangular to circular, the emotion found in the abstract positioning of these issues, that establishes the foundation behind all of my work. ”
