  Feature Artist Bio

By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the second of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by American

landscape painter Kevin Mizner (born 1962 in Maine, USA).

Kevin Mizner is a self-taught artist. 2017 marks his 40th year as an oil painter, and ten years as a full-time artist. His style is a fusion of techniques and philosophies from Artists past and present. The majority of his work is done in the age-old Glazing technique practiced by the Dutch artists of the 15th and 16th centuries. To Glaze is to apply thin, translucent paint in layer upon layer which allows color to achieve a deep, rich- almost luminescent- glow. Artists such as Vermeer, Pieter de hooch and Rembrandt were masters of that technique.  Mizner’s color philosophy however is drawn from the Impressionist era of the late 19th Century. In his glazes he is apt to use broken color, color opposites and harmonies to mimic the physical properties of light and shade that made paintings by the French and American Impressionist so vibrant. Lastly, his approach to realism stems from his life-long love of the artists from the Golden Age of Illustration- the 1920’s through the 1940’s.  Those artists, ranging from N.C. Wyeth, Dean Cornwell, Norman Rockwell and others used strong, dynamic designs and interesting, unique view-points to make their pictures carry and emotional impact.  Mizner may dance up to the line of photo realism, but his viewpoint and perspective are not that of a camera but rather as the human eye would see it.

Mizner lives and paints in
Pittson, Maine with his wife Ellen and his two dogs Orion and Champ. He is represented by Bayview Gallery in Brunswick, Maine, Scott Bundy Gallery in Kennebunkport, and IronBound Gallery in Camden, Maine.

                       ARTIST'S STATEMENT

“My inspiration comes from the the land and people around me, and from my own personal experience.  As such, I have studied the ocean while working as a sternman on a Maine lobsterboat, I have logged countless miles hiking along our coast, woods, fields and hills.  All because I feel it makes for a more honest painting if I’ve seen it, done it and felt it.”
