  Feature Artist Bio

By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the first of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by American landscape painter Denis Byrd (born 1978 in Atlanta, GA).

Denis Byrd received a BA in Studio Art from The University of Georgia 2003 and a Masters of Art Education from Georgia State University 2014. He has exhibited in several shows in the Atlanta area, including Following Bartram’s Trail at The Winsor Gallery in 2014-2015 and the Emerging Artist Show at Anne Irwin Gallery in 2011 and 2012.

Denis is a juried member of the Oil Painters of America and has been commissioned by Historical Jonesboro and Reynolds Nature Preserve for several pieces. In addition to being a full-time artist he is a middle and high school art teacher and the host of The Renaissance, a podcast devoted to Renaissance art history. As part of his research he has spent the last few years hiking and painting plein air along Bartram Trail throughout Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

In his work you will see the influence of the Romantic painters such as JMW Turner and Frederick Church as well as later Impressionist painters, namely Sargent. He is also inspired by Howard Pyle and the artists of the Brandywine School. While influenced by their style and handling of paint he has never sought to imitate but rather incorporate those elements into his work. Merging these varied influences with his own experiences he expresses himself while still remaining rooted the traditions of oil painting. As an artist his goal is to find an emotional connection with the viewer through painting. While painting predominantly landscapes he feels that it is not the subject matter that is important but rather the feeling it invokes.
