By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the second of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by American landscape painter Joyce Kahn (born 1947 in Boston, Massachusetts).

Joyce received her BA at Brandeis University in Sociology and had no art training until the late 1990’s, when a friend encouraged her to take her first class. Her natural flair for color had previously manifested in her garden and on her loom. Her persistence in pursuing her newly-found passion spurred her to study weekly for many years with VT artist Jeneane Lunn and also with VT artists Diane Sophrin, Joy Spontak, and Susan Abbott. She sought out workshops in pastels with many prominent pastellists: Doug Dawson, Lorenzo Chavez, Robert Carsten, Frank Federico, Susan Ogilvie, Margaret Dyer, Aline Ordman, Christine Ivers, Liz Haywood-Sullivan, Rosalie Nadeau, Richard McKinley and most recently with Tony Allain. and Richard McKinley. She also took workshops in oils with David Curtis and Elio Comacho.

Joyce has had the good fortune of being accepted twice at the Johnson Studio Center’s Vermonter Week.

 

Joyce’s painting style has been described by some as Expressionist and by others as Impressionist. But many have called her a colorist because of her vibrant and instinctive use of color. She loves to paint en plein air, and participated this past August in her second Saranac Lake Plein Air Festival. Joyce also spends a week each summer painting on Monhegan Island, Maine, where she revels in the splendid light, the beauty of the ocean, the sunshine, and the spectacular sunsets. When not traveling, Joyce is often scouring the back roads of Central VT in her trusty Subaru, in pursuit of her next best landscape painting. She never has to travel very far.

 

A longtime member of the VT Pastel Society, Joyce has served as its membership chair, and is currently on the Board. She exhibits primarily in VT in solo and group exhibitions. In the past year, Joyce has begun teaching pastel classes and loves sharing her wealth of knowledge about basic art principles and their application to painting with pastels.
