"An Early Fall"
Feature Artist Bio
By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the first of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by contemporary American landscape painter Devin Michael Roberts (born 1984 in Oregon, USA).
Devin is an American contemporary realist oil painter based out of the Midwestern United States, primarily known for his unique blend of Tonalist, Impressionist and Emotionalist techniques and philosophies both in his landscapes and his still lifes. Although primarily considered a self-taught artist, Devin has been fortunate enough to study at Gage academy in Seattle as well as various workshops under painters such as Jim Lamb and Mitch Alballa.
Devin's art has a broad range of influences; however he considers both Isaac Levitan and George Inness to have had the greatest impact on his philosophy regarding Landscape painting and paint application. Says Roberts, “George Inness opened me up to the spiritual aspect of the landscape. Understanding that emotion can be brought about by manipulating edges, texture and color. Understanding that our purpose as artist’s lay in distilling emotion into a readable language. A form that helps non artist’s to see the landscape in a different way; as the artist sees it.”
Devin’s technical process is ever evolving. He currently puts a focus on beginning his paintings from life, either from a study done on location or from life in the studio. He takes these studies and uses them as the reference for his studio paintings. The studio paintings are created with the aid of these references, by memory or by blend of memory and imagination. “I have many different techniques I have picked up over the years. I may utilize any of them at any given point or sometimes I choose to blend techniques together. So I may begin with a block in of the big shapes in transparent color washes, or I may begin with a light pencil drawing. Sometimes I go in directly with no underpainting at all… Once I get to the finishing stage my technique becomes more concerned with color, texture and edges. I use a mixture of brushwork and texture using a palette knife, credit cards, paper towels and brushes. After those layers dry I will usually go in with transparent color glazes. I find the glazing to be an integral part of my technique.”
“I am really excited to see what the future holds, I know no matter what changes I go through in life, the thing that remains constant within me is my love and dedication to painting and preserving the landscape.”
Devin is currently represented by Reuben Saunders Gallery, Strecker-Nelson Gallery and Capital Fine Art Gallery.

Twelve Pieces by Contemporary Artist
Devin Michael Roberts (Born 1984)
“Painting out in the landscape is where I find the most joy, wonder and peace in my life. When I create an oil painting the thing that remains constant every time is my desire to convey the sense of mood and mystery that I feel and hopefully take the viewer on a journey that results in a clearer vision of our beautiful planet. If I can help that viewer escape for a few moments from the monotony of their life, if I can take them out of their office or home and put them on the top of a mountain or beside the ocean, I have fulfilled my purpose.”
