ARTIST'S STATEMENT

“I am inspired by my own travels. Places and people offer me new scenarios and feelings to pour into my painting. Europe, USA, Asia, all cultures suggest diversity, to which I want to be the eye witness. On the other hand, art is a lens that translates the outside world for me to understand it and connect to humanity.
My way to achieve this is either paint on location, or take notes and draw sketches when I travel. I strive to work by memory, which requires a deeper observation; I select only what really reso-nates within. If I use my own photos I draw an edited version of the subject. Then I decide my own color arrangement, according to my mood and pre-mix a limited number of colors on my palette. At this point the brushwork should be (or at least appear) the easiest and most effortless. In other words, the painting should paint itself!
Ultimately I want the viewer to get lost in a timeless story. It's my highest reward. And a bet every single time.”

Feature Artist Bio
By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the second of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by Italian painter
Luigi Meregalli (born 1946 in Carate Brianza, Milan, Italy).

Luigi Meregalli has painted for more than 40 years. Early in his youth his interest and passion for art begin to grow. When he finished junior high school, he began his technical studies, suggested by his parents. In the 70s he moved to Riva del Garda, where he worked in the precision mechanic industry and, at the same time, he pursued his natural artistic vocation. Meregalli learned the drawing and painting foundations and attended courses held by the master Mariano Missaglia from Venice.
In 1976 he met sculptor Aroldo Pignattari and joined the historical cultural association of Riva del Garda “Gruppo amici dell’arte” (“Friends of art group”). Enchanted by the beauty of the places of the Garda lake, he started his art career by exhibiting his landscape paintings.
In the 80’s, thanks to awards he won in regional contests, he received his first recognition from the critics. During this time, fascinated by the technique, he turned his attention to the study of the watercolour discipline, which permitted him to express at its best his research made by poetry and transparencies. Via watercolours he was able to obtain “wonderful communication and untouchable atmospheric artworks,” as Paolo Levi wrote in the volume “Immagine e Struttura” (Image and Structure), published by Giorgio Mondadori. From then on, watercolours became his favorite technique because it is the most similar to his artistic sensibility.
In the nineties Luigi alternated solo and group exhibitions of ever greater importance, in Italian and foreign cities, such as Vicenza, Udine, Florence, Rome, Venice, Bologna, Milan, Ferrara, Naples, Genoa, Bensheim (D) and Burghausen (D). In 2002 the Department of Culture of Arco organized a profound personal exhibit in the Palazzo dei Panni called “La costruzione di una preziosa trina” (The construction of a precious lace), an important event that earned lots of public and critical approval. Unfortunately, the premature loss of his wife, Manuela, clouded this event.
After some difficult years, in 2004 he joined the “Associazione Italiana Acquarellisti” (Italian Watercolourists Association), and participated actively in almost every exhibit of the national association. Luigi still collaborates with the organization on personal workshops. In 2010 he organised a unique exhibition at the civic gallery “G. Craffonara” in Riva del Garda with three of his four creative children entitled “Ritratto di famiglia” (Family portrait), where he showed painting/graphic/photographic and narrative artworks, proving that in his family everyone has his own role and a specific artistic language. In the same year, he was invited to the Museo della Carta (Paper Museum) in Fabriano to show his paintings for the Watercolours International Prize “Marche d’acqua,” where only about thirty artists selected throughout Europe can take part.
In addition to his personal growth in the world of art, he continuously follows with dedication the group “Amici dell’Arte” of Riva del Garda, assuming the role of President of the Association in 2012, 2014 and 2016, contributing his organizational experience to improve the management of the Group. For a few years he has also taught painting and watercolors in several courses.
Luigi's artworks are found in private collections in Italy and abroad. Meregalli has been reviewed in periodical magazines and mentioned in important annual reports and contemporary and modern art catalogues.
