By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the second of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by contemporary American landscape painter Douglas Howe (born 1935 in Portland, Maine).

Douglas Howe first discovered the great advantage of painting directly from nature as a plein air artist in 1960, while home from art school. The artist studied at the American Academy of Art, Chicago, IL, where he focused on life drawing and painting. It was after painting Stony Brook without the use of blue that he realized the charm of the Impressionistsstyle.

When he began to seriously paint landscapes in 1977, Douglas found challenges in painting scenes from the Maine coast, inland to the mountains and through Maine’s countryside. Creating his work in all four seasons, in both pleasant and stormy conditions, he has found additional challenges. His painting is truly finished when he has captured the moment on his canvas for all to enjoy.

Douglas was influenced by such artists as John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, Aldro T. Hibbard and hundreds of others. After studying the technique used by Emile A. Gruppe, he learned to paint using primary colors only. This remains his palette today.

               ARTIST'S STATEMENT

"Plein air has been my choice for over fifty years. I have learned that painting directly from nature is the best way to achieve realism, that there is no way to bring nature, with its nuances, into the studio via photos.
