By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the second of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by contemporary American landscape painter Nellie Gill (born 1938 in Oklahoma, USA).

Although she always enjoyed making things, family was the focus of Nellie Gill and she did not start painting until her children were in junior high school. At that time she asked Warren Hunter if she could study oils with him. He said his oil classes were full but he could put her in his watercolor class. Nellie fell in love with watercolor and worked hard to learn as much as she could about that exciting medium. She also took drawing and life drawing classes from Mr. Hunter.

Nellie credits the San Antonio Watercolor Group with helping tremendously in her art education. Several times a year they brought in accomplished watercolorists for workshops and Nellie took a number of those. In addition she has read and intensively studied every art book she could get her hands on.

The strength and personal concept in her work has resulted in successful one-woman exhibits as well as acceptances in group shows across the nation. Her paintings have been accepted in many national competitions including those of the American Watercolor Society and National Watercolor Society. Honors include the Dupage Award from the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Gold Medal (twice) from the San Antonio Watercolor Group, Grumbacher Gold Medallion and many other awards.

Nellie has been very active in art organizations serving on boards, giving demonstrations, teaching workshops and judging exhibitions. She has traveled extensively and enjoys painting everywhere she goes. People have seen her painting in several European countries, in Canada, Mexico and in most of the states in the United States.

In 2012 Nellie began painting more with oils. Although she enjoys the challenges of watercolor she has found that painting in plein air with oils is also exciting and challenging. The majority of her plein air work currently is with oils. Last year she won the Traylor Award from the San Antonio Art League for an oil painting done on location from her church parking lot.

Twelve Pieces by Contemporary Artist

               ARTIST'S STATEMENT

"Part of the reason I paint is because of a passion that I can't explain, just as someone has a passion for sports or ice cream but can't explain why.

Anytime I'm outdoors working from nature I can't help but be awed and grateful for the work of the Greatest Creator. I've spent many hours behind the brush. It makes me happy and if I can enjoy the process of painting there is not much else I can ask for.”
