By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the second of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by British painter Georgie Rey (born 1961 in Singapore, Malaysia).

An English artist who studied Interior Design at Chelsea Art College, London. She married, lived and worked in Paris and then Mauritius for 28 years until last year when she returned to her home county in Surrey, UK. She started painting 30 years ago taking lessons with a well know Mauritian artist/stage set designer, Serge Constantin. On Saturday afternoons Serge and a group of artists met and painted around Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, particularly at the Port. She has also painted with and attended workshops held by Richard Kenton-Webb and Barry John Raybould. She joined Barry's online Visual Art Academy and continues to work according to his principles.

She is a firm believer of painting outdoors from nature, en plein air, alla prima, (doing a painting in one session, wet in wet) in all sizes, sometimes very small 6 x8" and sometimes very large. She never paints from photograph. She is experimenting in making large colourful abstracts paintings from her plein air oil studies and watercolour studies done in the studio. She enjoys walking in natural, wild, quiet places, this is where she finds her inspiration. She spends many months making numerous studies then develops them into a large abstract work. She is particularly interested in the subconscious and follows it's messages, never knowing where it will take her. Many of her paintings come from the subconscious when working onsite after many months of studying the subject. She is not copying the landscape but rather interpreting it.

Drawing, composition and understanding values are extremely important to her. She paints according to how she feels and follows her intuition. She paints for the pure pleasure of being outdoors and painting, looking at the colours and shapes and how to interpret them. She is always learning and changing, becoming more at ease with oil paint and the difficulties of handling it!

In 1993 Georgie exhibited at the Grand Palais, Paris, in the Salon D’autumn for French-Speaking Countries. Her oil paintings are also displayed in 5-star hotels in Mauritius namely: Le Tousserok Hotel, Belle Mare Plage Hotel and Lux Grand Gaube.

She is currently exhibiting with the Guildford Art Society “Guildford Arts Autumn Exhibition" at the Guildford House Gallery, Guildford, Surrey, UK as well as with Salim Currimjee Art Gallery in Mauritius, “Constantin and his friends”.

Next year Georgie will be exhibiting with AppArt at Prior’s Field School, Godalming, Surrey, UK.

Twelve Pieces by Contemporary Artist

                       ARTIST'S STATEMENT

“I like to paint in the wilderness far away from people, traffic and buildings. Rhythm, colour, light, composition, space, movement are all very important to me. I like to walk in quiet, wild places where I pick my spots. It takes time, you have to "stalk" your subject, it has to nag you to paint it!

Every picture has a different method and you have to feel how to work it. Sometimes you just have to wait, you can't do anything! Thinking about it is also an important part of the process and giving it time, maturing as such. I listen to my intuition and go to the places that I feel I must go to. I also like shapes and colour.
Interesting shapes in the landscape attract me.
