Feature Artist Bio
By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the first of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by contemporary Dutch-American landscape painter Margie Lakeberg (born 1954 in the Netherlands).
Born in Holland, Margie emigrated to the Chicago area before she could walk. One of the wonderful things about living near Chicago is the access to great art that is the city. As a child one of the highlights of every summer was a train trip to the loop and an afternoon at the Chicago Art Institute with her mother, who always encouraged her in any pursuit. As a student she received a Talent Scholarship from Governor’s State University and finished with a BFA , majoring in photography .
For many years Margie worked at home with her husband, prize-winning luthier William Lakeberg, carefully finishing violins, violas and cellos with handmade finishes produced in small quantities. Luthiery is an art in itself and incredibly time consuming. William now specializes in the making of double basses at the Cincinnati Bass Cellar and Margie is able to concentrate on painting the lovely and varied landscapes of the Ohio Valley.
Somewhat late in life new opportunities have come Margie’s way as it often does when children are grown and one has to regroup. Through a friend at the Boone County Visual Arts Association she was informed about an art venue where she met a new friend who invited her to paint with the South West Ohio Plein Air painters. Their group is a wonderful free organization branched off from the venerable Cincinnati Art Club. Since then plein air painting has been an invaluable tool for improving skills and also for meeting artists and art lovers. It has been such a good experience that she has founded another plein air group that concentrates their efforts in the Northern Kentucky region.
Margie has won several awards in the last 7 years, among them she is the second person in 47 years to receive the Duveneck Award three times at the Duveneck Memorial Art Show in Covington , Kentucky. She also has had the honor of showing her work three times in the Kentucky Capitol Rotunda and in the Kentucky First Lady’s office.

“ I have learned from so many artists, past and present. To study their work is my learning experience. I would say, however, that I am self-motivated and that we are all students of the artists who came before us.”
