By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the first of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by American landscape painter Cathyann Burgess (born 1950 in NYC, New York).

Cathyann Lautier Burgess is a first-generation American born to WWII immigrants from the Mediterranean island of Malta. Cathyann became captivated by the creativity of her father, a carpenter and tradesman. She credits her father for her love of drawing and music. “The gift of a pochade filled with oil paints for my 13th birthday was my first validation of being an artist," she claims. It is this small act of kindness that helped confirm her desire to study art.

Cathyann cites these great masters as her favorites: Edgar Degas, John Singer Sargent, Robert Henri, Sorolla, and Caravaggio. All convey mastery in drawing; conveying the quality and drama of light on form. Contemporary artists of note are too many too list but all have an influence.

Cathyann has taught art to adults and children for over 25 years. Her father's love of learning coupled with patience as her first teacher, left a legacy of love and passion for sharing knowledge with others. She has found teaching about art an enriching and satisfying career. Her compassionate teaching style reflects her belief that continued study, practice and attention to high standards of quality will result in excellence.

A lifelong learner, Cathyann’s most recent studies include workshops with Nelson Shanks, Daniel Greene, and Matthew Mancini. A native of New York City, Cathyann with her husband, now makes her home and studio in Hendersonville, North Carolina. She serves on the board of the Appalachian Pastel Society as Program Chair. She paints full-time after retiring from teaching art at Benedictine High School, Richmond VA, where she chaired the department of Fine Arts she created in 1998. Her works are in both corporate and private collections.

             ARTIST'S STATEMENT

"It matters little what I paint. It matters much that I paint. A certain glance, attitude, light or mood communicates with me strong enough to get me motivated to speak back. Then I go to my studio and pick up chalk or brush. It is there at the easel where I find contentment, simple yet abundant with memories and moments I wish to record."
