OFFICIAL WEBSITE
By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the first of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by American painter Sue Gilkey (born 1958 in New Jersey, USA).
The complexities of working in oil infinitely challenge and delight Sue Gilkey. Her work is observational, expressive, and intuitive, bringing together subject and narrative. “The painting process for me, is a meditation on the aesthetics of the subject I’m observing. I am always interested in developing a painting that will connect to the viewer and evoke a sense of shared experience.”
Gilkey began painting as a child, inspired and encouraged by her French Grandfather. Growing up in New Jersey, Gilkey studied with a well-known local artist. She went on to earn her BFA in painting from the University of New Hampshire, USA. There she was classically trained in materials and techniques across all subjects. This was followed by post-graduate work at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She has studied Tonalism and pursues a traditional approach to painting, striving to combine an emotional element along with direct observation.
She divides her time between her home on the Charles River in Massachusetts and her seaside cottage in Ireland. Sue maintains a teaching practice in her Boston area studio and teaches annual workshops in her Irish studio.
Gilkey has exhibited in major shows, receiving numerous awards (see below). Her work is found in private collections in the U.S. and Europe.
She is represented by Gallery Antonia, Chatham, MA; Edward Montgomery Fine Art, Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA ; Cecil Byrne Gallery, Charleston, SC; The Killarney Art Gallery, Killarney, Ireland, and Cleo, in Kenmare, Ireland.
Sue is an artist member of The Salmagundi Club, NY, NY.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

“The painting process for me, is a meditation on the aesthetics of the subject I’m observing. I am always interested in developing a painting that will connect to the viewer and evoke a sense of shared experience.
I absorb imagery and over time a finished painting idea will emerge in my mind, usually inspired by a story I have heard or a scene I have observed many times. My muse is Ireland and I find inspiration there in the ever changing light and atmospheric conditions. I love the countryside and the farm life that surrounds me.”
