By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the first of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by American painter Ginny Stocker (born 1959 in Ohio, USA).

Ginny Stocker has always known that she would paint; she sees the world in terms of shape and color and left her rural hometown of Bluffton, Indiana to study Fine Art at Miami University of Ohio at the age of 17. She painted, and created, and studied, but the reality of pending adulthood and a recession pushed her toward Graphic Design and Business.

She took time off to raise her children and found a ready canvas in the walls of her historic home—pink stripes in the foyer and a painstaking sponge treatment in the formal living room—her inner artist was always trying to break free. She assured herself all the while, “Grandma Moses didn’t start until she was 70—I still have time.”

She blinked, and suddenly 60 is looming and her husband, Steve, is threatening her with retirement. Armed with a sense of urgency and a fresh box of pastels, Ginny starts painting. And painting. And painting. A lifetime of paintings that have been bottled up for decades now spring forth from her pigments onto sandpaper, and gatorboard, and canvas, and whatever else she can get her hands on to infuse with color and movement.

Ginny is an impressionist. Her favorite pieces flow quickly and have a sense of happiness about them. She has a playful style of mark-making and is fascinated by the constant evolution of her style that is driven by prolific, daily creation. Each new day of painting is a step closer to honing in on what will become her own personal style. She hurries this process along by deliberately manipulating technique and subject matter in each of her new paintings and asking herself, “How can I use each stroke to infuse light and energy into my work?”

A lifelong learner, Ginny strives to learn everything there is to know about the world of pastel painting and jumps to attend any and all workshops that cross her path, inspired by the ways her colleagues will the pastel medium into their own particular styles. She studies her environment. She finds inspiration in the natural landscapes of her many travels; photographing and sketching a place that speaks to her and then recalling it in more profound detail in her studio. The rose-colored tint of her memory often makes for a more dynamic, exciting painting.

She’s constantly stretching the boundaries of the color wheel to combine colors in new ways and share the natural beauty of her first favorite subject—landscapes. High contrast within a painting is something that always catches her eye, and she is experimenting with contrast in her own work. She wants to draw the viewer into each work, giving them reason to pause and study. She is excited to create larger, bolder, brighter pieces that draw a viewer in from across the room.

Ginny is an emerging artist. Her works can be enjoyed in private collections and small shows in the Midwest and Southeast United States, and of course on her website and in online exhibitions. She’s deeply hoping that her hard work will mean that one day her paintings will be appreciated in galleries and museums all over the world.

Twelve Pieces by Contemporary Artist

                      ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I am working like crazy to use my art to fill every moment in the second half of my life! In this moment, that means finding inspiration wherever I am in the world, and bringing a piece of that inspiration back to my studio—sketches and photographs—to capture the essence of that place in riotous color and short, energetic strokes of pigment.
