By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the second of two 12-piece Exhibitions of works by Canadian landscape artist Paul Chester (born 1956 in Toronto, Canada).

 

Paul studied painting and sculpture in art academies in Toronto and Paris and graduated from Ontario College Of Art in 1992, now known as OCAD University. Inspired by the horizons, water scenes, and rolling hills that surround his home and studio in southeastern rural Ontario, the contemporary landscapes of Paul Chester demonstrate an extraordinary relationship with nature. His paintings are often hazy, almost dream-like, as if they are dug-up after thoughts of emotion.

 

With oil as his primary medium, Chester builds the surfaces of his canvases with many layers of paint and glazes, thereby crafting intricate, tactile landscapes. The physicality in the treatment of these canvases is closely connected to Chester's sculptural experience and sustained relationship with his natural surroundings. Lines are often scratched and carved into the paint, exposing the ground beneath. While each work stands alone in its intimate portrayal of the conjured memory of the artist's natural world, the luminosity that highlights the individual landscapes is the essential element that threads Chester's works together. His paintings are not individually derived from specific locations but are rather suggested fragments of recollection, glimpses of memory.

 

Chester has had 34 Solo Exhibitions and over 40 Group Shows across Canada, the United States and London, England and is currently represented by 10 galleries.
