  Feature Artist Bio

By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the second of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by American landscape painter, Joan Sicignano (born 1942 in Astoria Queens, New York).

After raising her family in in the 1960s, Joan began the task of teaching herself to draw and paint. In the 1980s she frequented the Metropolitan Art Museum and the Frick Museum, where she fell in love with 19th-century Impressionism. Her studies included reading books on the French masters such as Renoir, Monet, Manet and Degas. The daunting task of maintaining a good family life and pursuing her love of art was, at times, nearly impossible. She remembered reading a quote in Renoir's biography that painting was his salvation, realizing that painting wasn't a job, but a passion to learn and to develop the necessary skills to produce artwork. 25 years later, Joan continues to pursue her passion for art.

In addition to French Impressionism, Joan draws inspiration from present-day masters such as Richard Schmid, Marc Hanson, Alex Perez and Paul Bachem; also local professional artist Larry Johnston who accompanies Joan and fellow artists when they are painting plein air. A resident of Long Island, NY, Joan enjoys many beautiful local places to paint. She and her group get out at least once a week. Other days it is Joan, her husband and their little dog Monet who frequent the parks, beaches and farms. When weather doesn't allow outdoor painting, she is content to work from miniature plein air and her photos.

Joan has won numerous awards for her paintings, and her work hangs in the homes of many collectors throughout the U.S. Her works have been on display in numerous library shows, and has sold many of her paintings at local art shows. Joan is a member of the Northshore Art Guild, Wet Paints Studio Group, and the Nassau Art League.

Happily married since 1963, Joan is a wife, mother and grandmother.
