By permission of the artistThe Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the second of two 12-piece Exhibition of works by American contemporary Impressionist painter Aaron Schuerr (born 1973 in Chicago, Illinois).

Aaron Schuerr, a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, is a dedicated plein-air painter based in Livingston, Montana. Working in both oil and pastel, he brings a quiet intimacy and sensitive rendering of light to the varied landscapes of the Rocky Mountain West.

Aaron started his art studies at the Art Institute of Chicago and moved on to an art college in Scotland. There he was introduced to mountains, the Highlands. One day he was drawing at the beach, looking toward the town taking in the sweep of the headlands. The rough charcoal drawing felt fresh and honest like nothing he had ever done. On that day Aaron packed up all his post-modern cleverness and became a landscape painter.

During his final year abroad, Schuerr explored the Scottish countryside almost daily, first working in charcoal, and then, as his confidence increased, with pastel. For his final year of college, Aaron took the bus and train to the countryside and did charcoal and pastel drawings. His studio suddenly got a whole lot bigger! In 1995 he received his fine art degree. At his graduation in Scotland, Aaron had the good fortune of nearly selling out his degree show, giving him enough cash to make it home to Montana. In 1996 he married Lynelle, a Montana girl, and followed her out west. They

lived in a small apartment in Livingston. For the first year he had no studio, so he was forced to brave the often savage  Montana weather in order to paint. It was the best training an artist can have.

Aaron still lives in Livingston, Montana with his wife and three sons. Though he now has a large studio to work out of, he still advocates painting directly from nature as much as possible. He teaches plein air workshops, and is wrote three articles for The Pastel Journal in 2012. When not painting in the field, he can be found on stage, most recently playing Friar Lawrence in production of Romeo and Juliet.

               ARTIST'S STATEMENT

“My art is borne out my inability to absorb, comprehend, and understand the natural world. I’m overwhelmed, and yet I can’t tear myself away. And so I paint, so as to stay there for just a little while longer. And then I return to the studio so as to digest what I’ve experienced while painting in the field. And then I take that frightening step: I invite the viewer to add his or her own story to it. Though painting is largely a solitary endeavor, it is never a lonely one, because I am invited to share in the ineffable mystery of beauty. And that is where the art is.”
