By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the first of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by American landscape painter Douglas H. Caves, Sr. (born 1954 in Webster, Massachusetts).

Doug Caves has been a lifelong student of the Arts. He attended the Fine Arts Program at Mt. Wachusett Community College studying art history, painting, drawing and sculpture and received the school’s Annual Purchase Award for his bronze sculpture “Head of Joy” in his last year of attendance. He has studied painting and drawing at the Worcester Art Museum and creative writing at Clark University.

Caves moved from an abstract approach to painting in his late twenties to explore the more representational genres that seemed to suit his need to have his feet planted firmly in the ground while his head and heart explored beyond the limits of physical reach. Caves spent many years pondering the meaning of and exploring the value of making art through various venues like house painting, home remodeling, landscape design and installation. He went on to acquire a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and then a Masters degree in Communication through Clark University.

Caves says that his approach to discovery has always been characterized by a desire to dive right in contrasted by a cautionary practice to take a perpendicular approach, a desire to discover through experience and a belief that the best is yet to come. Doug is affiliated with the Masterpiece Gallery in Boston, MA, the Frame Depot in Milford, NH, Portland Art Gallery, Portland, ME, the Gallery at the Grand in Kennebunk, ME, and has been affiliated with Gallery 529, Littleton, MA and has been represented by Canvas Fine Arts, showing at various Boston venues such as Boston City Hall and the Liberty Hotel.

             ARTIST'S STATEMENT

"These days I’m exploring the poetry of light and texture that I sense from a given place in a given moment through the guise of landscape painting using composition and color as my tools. I have always found inspiration from excursions into the fields, woods, hills and the varied coastal shores of New England. These journeys seem to spark insights and help me make connections that leap beyond the simple joy of being in the place at the present moment. Back at the easel, the very physical act of applying a paint-loaded brush to a surface with intent is the next step in the process of discovery and creating. My intentions as a visual artist are to bring light, color and texture into an engaging composition on the canvas; to create an image that conveys a simplicity of moment wrenched from the chaotic world.” D.H.
