By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the second of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by British landscape painter Wendy Griffin (born 1961  in West Sussex, UK).

Born in Horsham, West Sussex, Wendy moved with her parents to Guernsey in the Channel Islands when she was 11 years old.

As a child, she loved to copy Disney characters and colour them in, and would spend hours drawing and colouring.

She enjoyed art at school and wanted to take art and music at A level but she was not allowed in those days because it didn't work into the curriculum, and the school that she attended was more geared toward the sciences. In rebellion, she left school at the age of 16, to work in a bank followed by the Civil Service, after taking her O levels. This stumped her potential to turn art into a career. Although she dabbled in oil painting after leaving school, her main passion was Ballroom and Latin American dancing which she pursued until her late teens.

It was only after her two children were born that her passion for art was re-ignited, and she was fortunate to go on annual painting courses/holidays with her father who was by then an established watercolour artist in the island. She learned a lot from many of these courses, and also gained knowledge through reading art books and watching art DVDs, and attending local workshops and evening classes. So basically Wendy is, as one would say, "self-taught."

Wendy had to overcome the negative impact of "only" gaining a B grade at O level art, and never feeling good enough or worthy enough in her art. It has taken her some years to feel that she is an "artist", but having won many trophies over the last few years at the local Eisteddfod and also Best in Show at local art club exhibitions this has certainly helped her gain her confidence.

Wendy paints predominantly in pastels although she still enjoys oil painting and watercolour at times, and her subject preference is seascapes.

She is a member of the local art club (Sarnia arts and crafts) and is also one of the few artists in the Master Guild of the Guernsey Picture Framers and Art Gallery, and is widely recognised as one of the island’s premier seascape artists.

Wendy lives in Guernsey with her husband, where she also maintains a studio.

             ARTIST'S STATEMENT

“Guernsey’s dramatic coastline and rough winter seas have long been my inspiration and I am drawn to atmosphere and light in creating my seascapes. I love to work “en plein air." The dramatic effects of nature and the way the light constantly changes can be mind-blowing and quite a challenge, but it’s worth every minute.

I also paint in my studio or with a group of friends, where I can work in more controlled conditions from the sketches and photographs I have gathered during my field trips."
