  Feature Artist Bio

By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the second of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by Russian

landscape painter Sergei Kurbatov (born 1970 in Budapest, Hungary).

Sergei Kurbatov graduated from the Academy of Applied Arts in St.-Petersburg, Russia, in 1993. After graduation he worked for a long time as a graphic designer and animator in St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk.

The period from 2000 to 2008 Sergei used to "charge his battery." That time was marked by a gradual accumulation of energy, knowledge and experience. The watercolors he created during this time were mostly detailed landscapes and still lifes. At that time he didn't think about selling his art, but about making his living as a graphic designer. Painting watercolors "for himself" gave Sergei the independence to experiment in subjects and style. This period of experimentation led him to find and develop his own creative language.

Since 2009, the watercolor has become  a major part of Sergei's career. This period he characterizes as "Recoil of energy" and simultaneous "Recharging." It was the time he viewed the first exhibitions of Novosibirsk and took a creative visit to Montenegro, where outdoor classes for beginner artists were held. Watercolor workshops and classes  in Novosibirsk were next, followed by participation in international watercolor Biennale in France, prizes, and publications. He also showed his work in a joint exhibition with Masha Kurbatova in Holland in 2013. After this Sergei took regular plein air trips with fellow artists in Russia and abroad: Crimea, Altai, Southern Kazakhstan, etc.

Currently, in addition to painting watercolors, Sergei is also engaged in teaching activities, periodically holding watercolor workshops in Novosibirsk, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and abroad.

Sergey Kurbatov artworks are in private collections in Russia, Europe, USA, Taiwan and Japan.

                          ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I’m driven to try and keep the memory of a scene that makes an impression on me.

Painting, to me, is as much about seeing the truth of a subject as it is about technique. It is the interpretation and personalization of that truth, even in a seemingly ordinarily object or place, that I hope will, in turn, be transmitted to the viewer and reward them for their time and effort.

Nothing matches the feeling that comes from talking with a patron who is truly pleased about having acquired a piece."
