Feature Artist Bio
By permission of the artist, The Cyber Art Show is pleased to feature the second of two 12-piece exhibitions of works by American
landscape painter JoAnne Wood Unger (born 1942 in New Jersey, USA).
JoAnne Unger was born in Irvington, New Jersey, but has lived in the Los Angeles area for most of her adult life. Like so many artists, she loved drawing and painting as a child, but put off serious study in the field until later in life. She studied Art History at California State University Northridge and Art Psychotherapy in graduate school at Loyola Marymount.
She has taken numerous classes at The California Art Institute and the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art. She continues her fine art education by attending workshops with leading contemporary landscape artists she admires including Richard McKinley, Kim Lordier, Kathryn Stats and many others.
JoAnne has a studio in Pacific Palisades, California and paints “en plein air” at every available opportunity. Much of her work is influenced by the beautiful coastline and park areas located nearby in Malibu. She paints small studies in the field and takes numerous photographs utilizing this reference material to paint larger works in her studio. Her work is available through the Forest and Ocean Gallery in Laguna Beach as well as directly through her studio.
She belongs to Oil Painters of America, the California Art Club, NOAPS, Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountain and Seashore, West Coast Pastel Society and Laguna Beach Plein Air Association. Her paintings have been showcased through these organizations as well as in the top 15% in the Fine Art Studio Online contests.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
“I am currently working in oil on a series of plein air and studio pieces based on the beauty of our California coastal areas.
It is my goal to lead the viewer on a voyage of discovery around the painting with the hope that they will be drawn in by the contrasting elements of light and dark values, color and colorlessness, impasto and smooth brushwork, vertical and horizontal elements, geometric and organic shapes, interesting compositional ideas and soft and hard edges.”
